Description:
The present critical-practical edition of George Frideric Handel's organ works is indebted in its layout and musical text to the complete edition of Handel's keyboard music, edited by Terence Best as part of the "Hallische Händel-Ausgabe" (HHA) published by our house. The practical Urtext edition is based on this critical report.
It differs from the HHA in two respects: Firstly, it compiles for the first time those works by Handel which can be claimed for the organ with good reason. The focus here is on a manuscript cycle of 12 fugues which can be traced back directly to Handel's surroundings and are published here as such for the first time in their entirety.
Secondly, the present edition provides plausible variant readings from various sources which are authentic or presumably go back to the composer. These variants are listed in the HHA only in the Critical Report.
The preface to the practical Urtext edition contains a brief description of all the sources that are considered in the editorial context. The description of the sources is followed by comments on the individual works. In addition, the volume contains contemporary organ dispositions and a Critical Report, which contains the source information for the individual works.
