The "Partite diverse," written for Christoph Dohr in 2019, attempts to apply a formal world—characterized by horizontal and vertical axial symmetry and culminating in the late Webern’s variation works—to the figurative variation technique of the (manual)choral partita of the German Baroque organ.
The first verse of this hymn—which has been frequently arranged in church music—reads as follows in Melchior Vulpius’s version: "Christ is my life / Death is my gain / To Him I surrender myself / In peace I depart." (Jena 1609). Along with its sister work, the "Petit Livre d’Orgue" k.M. op. 36a (published as E.D. 20301), the suite shares a seven-part symmetrical macroform, each with two corresponding movements in "double counterpoint."
