Composed in 2019, this work is a tribute to Louis Marchand (1669–1732), whose organ compositions, with their "noble simplicity and quiet grandeur," strike me as a precursor to the music of Erik Satie. (It would therefore be understandable if Marchand had avoided an encounter with Johann Sebastian Bach.) The "coincidental" harmony—which culminates in an overarching musical structure of 3- to 5-part mesotonal chord progressions—made possible the realization of Bagatelles "in Old French registration," a project that had been planned earlier.
The suite shares a seven-part symmetrical macroform with its sister work, the "Partite diverse" k.M. Op. 36b (released as E.D. 20302), each featuring two corresponding movements in "double counterpoint." (Martin Lennartz)
