Description:
Before Ludwig van Beethoven gave up performing piano recitals due to his progressive deafness, he bid farewell to his audience with a grand concert in December 1808 at the Theater an der Wien. In addition to the grand finale, the Choral Fantasy, Op. 80, Beethoven also performed as an improviser. This improvisation likely served as the basis for the Fantasy, Op. 77, composed in 1809 and published in 1810. Given Beethoven’s connection to the organ and the importance of improvisation and free fantasy in organ playing, transposing the Piano Fantasy, Op. 77, to the organ seems a natural choice. The transcription thus serves as a fine complement to the shorter works for the musical clock. (Martin Schmeding)
