October 1, 1905, Janáček’s significant piano work, commonly referred to as a sonata, had an eventful history. The composition originally consisted of three movements and was inspired by the death of a Czech worker who was shot by the military during a demonstration in Brno. Shortly before the work’s premiere in 1906, however, the composer first destroyed the final movement and then, following a private performance of the piece in Prague, destroyed the remaining two movements as well.

It was not until the celebrations marking Janáček’s seventieth birthday that the pianist who had premiered the work mustered the courage to play it once more for the composer from her own score. As a result, Janáček finally decided to have the work published after all. The score, based on the "Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leoš Janáček," includes practical fingering suggestions.
