Die virtuosen 24 Variationen über ein Thema des Mainzer Hofkapellmeisters Vincenzo Righini waren 1791 die erste Originalausgabe eines Beethoven-Werkes bei Schott (Plattennummer 145). Das Thema stammt aus dem bei Schott 1788 erschienenen Heft 'XII Ariette Italiane' für Singstimme und Klavier (Plattennummer 92). Die Zusammenarbeit mit Beethoven wurde dann erst ca. 35 Jahre später mit den Opera 121b bis 128 und 131 (darunter die Missa solemnis und die 9. Sinfonie) fortgesetzt. Auch die von Anton Schindler überlieferten, angeblich letzten Worte ('Schade, schade, zu spät') verbinden Beethoven mit dem Musikverlag: Die Lieferung des auf Anraten seines Arztes bei Schott bestellten Rheinweins erreichte ihn erst auf dem Sterbebett.
