Description:
With the sonatas op. 31, composed in 1802, Beethoven brought together piano sonatas as a group for the last time. The highlight of the collection is undoubtedly the middle work in D minor, whose drama already fascinated contemporaries. According to Anton Schindler, who asked the composer for the key to this and the Sonata op. 57 (Appassionata), Beethoven is said to have advised him: Just read Shakespeare's Tempest.
The world-renowned Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on all known sources for his critical-practical Urtext edition. The results of this meticulous research are revealed in a meticulously edited musical text, which offers new readings, and in a detailed Critical Commentary. An elegant musical notation with optimal solutions for the legibility of the complex music, taking into account the musical movement and with practical turning points, meets the demands of musical practice. The new Bärenreiter edition is rounded off by valuable notes on central questions of performance practice (including pedal use, articulation, ornamentation).
