The "Character Pieces" op. 7 and the "Children's Pieces" op. 72 are Mendelssohn's most highly regarded piano albums alongside his Songs without Words and the "Variations sérieuses" op. 54. Robert Schumann spoke of the character pieces as an "interesting contribution to the history of the development" of the "young master":
The compositions, most of which were written in 1827, owe much to his lessons with Carl Friedrich Zelter in Berlin, who encouraged his pupil to creatively engage with the strict style of "early music", especially that of Johann Sebastian Bach, but at the same time, as he himself said, allowed him to dream confidently of "dragons and goblins".

In the 19th century, the piano was one of the staples of pedagogy. The demand for piano training in childhood quickly led to the development of a repertoire appropriate to this phase of life. Children's albums boomed, especially towards the middle of the century, and were popular gifts for children's birthdays, Christmas and similar occasions.

Mendelssohn's Kinderstücke op. 72 were published in London in 1847, the year of his death, as "Christmas Present for His Young Friends".

The edition contains both piano cycles in the version of the first edition, but also offers autograph variants and early versions in an extensive appendix.
