At the age of 14, he was accepted into Renate Kretschmar-Fischer's master class at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold. In addition to his studies, which he completed with distinction in 1989, he worked with Claudio Arrau, Oleg Maisenberg, Bruno Leonardo Gelber and Murray Perahia. During his studies, he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation and the Mozart Society Dortmund; in 1990 he received the sponsorship award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Matthias Kirschnereit won prizes at the German Music Competition in Bonn (1987), the Concours Géza Anda in Zurich (1991) and the International Piano Competition in Sydney (1992). His international concert activities have taken him to all five continents. Matthias Kirschnereit, whose particular love is chamber music, has recorded various CDs with works by Mozart and Mendelssohn Bartholdy, among others. He has been a professor at the Rostock University of Music and Drama since 1997.
