Description:
In his research, Christopher Hogwood drew on a source that George Bozarth drew attention to in spring 2011 and which had remained unpublished until then.
During a concert tour that the young Brahms undertook with the violinist Ede Reményi in 1853, he visited the Göttingen university music director Arnold Wehner and noted down a short piano piece in his Album Amicorum, which also contains contributions by Robert and Clara Schumann, Mendelssohn, Jenny Lind, Rossini and Liszt, among others.
The source provides the one-page autograph of this small "album leaf", unnamed by Brahms, which the composer reused 12 years later - transposed from A minor to A flat minor and revised - in his Horn Trio.
The piano piece appears in the scholarly-critical edition both as a facsimile and in modern notation.
