Description:
Schumann's Arabeske and Blumenstück were composed during his stay in Vienna from October 1838 to April 1839 in the context of weightier piano works such as the C major Fantasy op. 17, the Humoreske op. 20 or the cycles Nachtstücke op. 23 and Faschingsschwank aus Wien op. 26. Unlike these, they appear more pleasing. They may have been a concession to the Viennese audience, but whether the Arabesque is "weak and for ladies", as Schumann thought, remains to be seen.
For his new edition of the popular pieces, the editor re-evaluates the surviving sources with a special focus on the bowing and takes into account the latest findings of Schumann research. The new edition is rounded off by a reader-friendly engraving with optimal turnarounds and knowledgeable notes on historical performance practice by pianoforte specialist Sezi Seskir (Bucknell University, Lewisburg/PA). Sezi Seskir is particularly concerned with questions about Schumann's piano playing and the performance practice of the 18th-19th centuries.
