Im Barockzeitalter bezeichnete man mit ' Clavier ' sämtliche Tasteninstrumente: Virginal , Clavichord , Cembalo, Hammerflügel und andere. Das 'Bärenreiter Piano Album ‚Barock'' bietet eine repräsentative Auswahl der wichtigsten Formen barocker Claviermusik aus England, Italien, Frankreich und Deutschland. Die nach diesen vier Ländern gegliederte Anthologie ist mit Abbildungen historischer Instrumente illustriert, die eine Vorstellung von der typischen Musizierpraxis des jeweiligen Landes vermitteln. Der zeitliche Rahmen spannt sich von dem italienischen Komponisten Girolamo Frescobaldi , dessen Clavierwerke exemplarisch für den Stilübergang von der Renaissance zum Barock stehen, über die englischen Virginalisten und die französischen Clavecinisten bis zu den epochalen Werken Johann Sebastian Bachs. Neben den nationalen Besonderheiten lernen die Klavierschüler die verschiedenen Phasen des Früh-, Hoch-, und Spätbarock sowie die wichtigsten Gattungen kennen wie z. B. Tanzsätze und polyphone Stücke (Fuge). Bei der Auswahl wurde besonders auf eine gute Spielbarkeit der Stücke auf dem modernen Klavier Wert gelegt. Da die barocke Ornamentik bei jedem Komponisten eine spezielle Ausführung erfordert, werden praxisbezogene Vorschläge innerhalb des Notentextes abgedruckt.
