Description:
The four "Ballades" for piano op. 10 are Brahms' contribution to the instrumental ballad form popular in the mid-19th century. Brahms used the more intimate vocal form as a model for the works composed in 1854 under the impression of the "twilight hours" spent with Clara Schumann. Schumann was enthusiastic about the new pieces which, as Brahms modestly explained, are "not very difficult, even less difficult to understand".
The "Ballades" op. 10 continue the series of Brahms's piano works in the Urtext published by Bärenreiter with another important contribution to the repertoire which should not be missed in advanced piano lessons. Fingerings by Brahms' renowned pianist Christian Köhn, a generous score and practical turning points fulfill the requirements of a practical edition, which is supplemented by a detailed preface with information on performance practice, genesis, sources and significance of the works.
