Description:
Rachmaninov's well-known piano cycle was composed in 1931, at a time when his great works for solo piano and the piano concertos had already brought him great fame. However, this is by no means an 'old age' work. With his variations on the theme 'La folia' (which he had taken from a Corelli sonata), the composer unleashes a veritable pianistic firework. He commented laconically to a friend: 'All this crazy running around is necessary to extinguish the theme'. I wonder if Rachmaninoff succeeded in silencing 'La folia' - that is, the 'craziness'? Try it out for yourself!
