As early evidence of Schubert's preoccupation with early music, his Fantasy in C D 2 E from 1811 contains echoes of Mozart's C minor Fantasy, while the virtuoso Graz Fantasy in C D 605 A, probably composed between 1818 and 1821, already foreshadows the monumental Wanderer Fantasy op. 15 - D 760 from 1822, in particular through a recurring motivic turn. 15 - D 760 from 1822.

The edition BA 10862, published by Bärenreiter in a generous new edition, brings together Schubert's most important contributions to the Fantasie for piano two hands and makes the early Fantasie in C accessible for the first time in a critical-practical Urtext edition. It offers advanced pupils, students and pianists a musically and technically highly exciting and varied addition to the repertoire. This edition is characterized by notes on performance practice, an informative preface, practical turns and elegant music graphics.

The most famous of the fantasias, the Wanderer Fantasy, is also published as a single edition (BA 10870).
When Schubert himself once played the Wanderer Fantasy with friends and faltered, he exclaimed impatiently: Let the devil play that stuff!
It was Liszt, who like Schumann was a great admirer of the Wanderer Fantasy, who later arranged it for piano and orchestra as well as for two pianos. It also owes its nickname, which it still bears today, to him.
