Bach's 'Goldberg Variations' remain a fundamental challenge for every harpsichordist and pianist to this day. The fact that Bach intended the work to be performed on a two-manual harpsichord poses a particular problem for interpretation on the modern grand piano.

Ragna Schirmer's fingering indicates the most comfortable way of crossing the hands, which is often necessary on the piano. She also uses the engraving of the original print from 1741 as an important guide for the distribution of the parts between the hands.
