Description:
The 'Aria mit verschiedenen Veränderungen vors Clavicimbal' was given its common title 'Goldberg Variations' by Johann Nikolaus Forkel, who in turn relied on reports from Bach's elder sons, because it was a work commissioned by the Russian envoy to the Dresden court for his house harpsichordist, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg. However, this account has been disputed many times, as Goldberg - a pupil of J. S. Bach from around 1737 - was only 12 or 13 years old at the time of the work's probable composition (around 1740). Nevertheless, the highly talented Goldberg is likely to have played the extremely demanding variations often.
