Description:
If the epithet "Appassionata" applies to one of Beethoven's sonatas, it is not the famous work in F minor op. 57, as Carl Czerny believed, but the E flat major sonata op. 7, which was written "in a very passionate mood". It is not only Beethoven's first "grande sonata", but also the first work in this genre that he had published individually. The earliest sketches date from 1796, and the sonata appeared in print in October 1797. It is one of Beethoven's most extensive and demanding piano sonatas and covers a wide emotional range in its four movements, a challenge that the 16-year-old dedicatee, his pupil Anna Luise Barbara Countess von Keglevicz, would hardly have been up to.
The world-renowned Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on all known sources for his critical and practical Urtext edition. The results of this meticulous research are revealed in a reliably edited musical text and a detailed Critical Commentary. An elegant musical notation with practical turnarounds and optimal solutions for the legibility of the complex music takes into account the demands of musical practice. The new Bärenreiter edition is complemented by indispensable notes on central practical performance issues (e.g. pedal use, articulation, ornamentation).
