Ideale op. 33 were first published by Jakob Rieter-Biedermann in two booklets in 1878 and 1884.
The first four pieces are headed with birth dates that suggest the revered "ideals". I. (June 8) is a tender and loving homage to the highly revered Robert Schumann. II (January 31) The Schubert homage in F sharp minor is rhythmically reminiscent of his Moment musical No. 5 D 780. IIIa and b (February 3) Two songs without words in Mendelssohn's honor. IV (* * * *) The last movement bears no date of birth, but three asterisks at the top of the page, as Robert Schumann had used for three movements in Album für die Jugend op. 68. Does the avoidance of a date indicate someone whom Kirchner admired but did not want to name publicly? The restless and passionate middle section brings to mind Clara Schumann, with whom Kirchner was on friendly terms until the relationship was broken off in the summer of 1864. The mystery will probably never be solved, but it does not detract from the piece's charm. (Jürg Löffler)
