I believe - without false vanity - that these three pieces will do well and take their place in the piano literature ... to the left of Schumann or to the right of Chopin ... as you like it, Debussy wrote confidently to his publisher Jacques Durand in August 1905. The "Images" enchant with iridescent timbres and dazzling harmonies "based on the latest discoveries in harmonic chemistry", carried by a virtuoso piano writing - notated on three staves throughout the second volume.

On the occasion of the composer's 150th birthday, Bärenreiter presents the Images, which were already extremely successful during Debussy's lifetime, in an up-to-date and reliable Urtext edited on the basis of the latest research results and source studies. A clearly structured score, fingerings by Tamara Stefanovich and practical performance notes provide the ideal basis for studying these works.

Tamara Stefanovich
studied at the University of Belgrade, at the Curtis Institute of Music and at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. She has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the London Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Jurowski and Pierre Boulez and has made recordings for Deutsche Grammophon. She performed Debussy's "Images" at the Ruhr Piano Festival in 2011. Together with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, she wrote the fingerings for the "Klavier-Festival Ruhr Bärenreiter Piano Album" (BA 9659).
