In his preface, the editor outlines the history of the Italian concerto form up to the unaccompanied solo concerto, of which Bach's Concerto nach Italiaenischen Gusto may be regarded as the pinnacle work, and in doing so provides an informal introduction to the performance practice of this work for a clavicymbal with two manuals (i.e. for a large harpsichord) for the modern piano. This edition of the work, whose autograph is lost, is based on the first print of 1735, the revised new edition of the same or Bach's hand copy of the print, as well as four copies.
