In his late piano sonatas Hob. XVI:40-42 (1784) and Hob. XVI:48-52 (1788-1795), Haydn shows himself to be a highly distinguished composer, accomplished in form and expression. As the quintessence of his sonata oeuvre, the works reflect Haydn's remarkable technical brilliance and the new impulses he received in London in his turn to the fortepiano. The London sonatas in particular are likely to have had a groundbreaking effect on the young Beethoven.

The new Urtext edition presents the works in an elegant and reader-friendly score with practical turning points. Editorial interventions have been kept to a minimum and are documented together with the readings in the Critical Commentary. The appendix contains the separately published version of the second movement of the Sonata in C major Hob. XVI:50. The fingerings take into account essential aspects of performance practice in Haydn's time as well as playing on the modern concert grand piano. Detailed notes on historical playing practice (especially on instruments, articulation/staccato, ornamentation and pedal) by the renowned harpsichordist and fortepiano player Rebecca Maurer as well as a knowledgeable preface round off this edition, which has been edited on the basis of the latest research findings.
