Description:
In May 1747, Bach visited King Frederick II at court in Potsdam, where he improvised on a theme given by the king on a Silbermann pianoforte. The three-part ricercar is in all likelihood the finished improvisation. The six-part ricercar represents the subsequent delivery of the "fugue with six obbligato voices" requested by the king, which Bach had only dared to improvise with a theme of his own choosing. The new edition of the two ricercari from the "Musical Offering", revised and expanded according to the latest findings of Bach research, contains not only the printed version of the six-part ricercari but also its autograph early version. A complete facsimile copy of this manuscript, the facsimiles of Bach's dedication text from the printed edition of the "Musical Offering" and a preface on the genesis and performance round off this edition. This edition is edited by the musicologist Christoph Wolff, who has made a name for himself with numerous Bach researches and discoveries.
