Satie's "Ogives" and "Gymnopédies" are milestones of musical modernism. The metrically free "Ogives" (pointed arches) reflect the influence of French neo-Gothic and neo-Gregorianism in architecture and music in clear lines and echo effects, while the three chordal, swaying "Gymnopédies", which also derive their effect from the extreme reduction of material, make tongue-in-cheek reference to the dances of Spartan youths known as "Gymnopedie".

These easy-to-play works are ideal for piano lessons. Practical performance tips by Satie specialist Steffen Schleiermacher and an informative foreword introduce the reader to Satie's musical imagination.
