Description:
Little is known about the genesis of Debussy's piano work "Pour le piano"; all that is known is that the "Sarabande" was composed in 1894 and that the year 1901 is clearly noted on the autograph.
Like the "Suite bergamasque", "Pour le piano" was also first published by Fromont in 1901, although Debussy did not transfer the rights to this work to the publisher in full until 1905. The reason for this delay was that Debussy wanted Fromont to cede the rights to "Pelléas et Mélisande" to his new publisher Durand. In return, Fromont was to receive the rights to "Pour le piano".
The Bärenreiter edition takes into account all surviving sources, documents the genesis of the work, contains a detailed critical commentary (in English) and provides valuable information on Debussy's aesthetics, his ideas on the use of pedals, tempo, rubato and articulation in the preface.
