Description:
The seemingly tranquil title "Stille Lieder und Tänze" (Silent Songs and Dances) gives little indication that the sixteen piano pieces are among Theodor Kirchner's most harmonically daring compositions. The beginning and end of the pieces are always conventional, but in between there are hardly two bars without harmonic, contrapuntal or rhythmic surprises. The interspersed Tristan chords (in Nos. 7, 10 and 15) seem like a tongue-in-cheek reminiscence of Richard Wagner, who died in 1883, the year of composition. (Jürg Löffler)
