Debussy's "Suite bergamasque" for piano with the famous "Claire de la lune" has a complicated genesis. The first edition was published in 1905 by the French publisher Fromont ; however, the origins of the suite go back to the early 1890s, when it was to be published by Choudens.

Almost 15 years passed before it was printed, during which Debussy changed the work, originally conceived in three movements, into a four-movement work. The surviving first proofs of the first edition clearly show Debussy's own deletions of dozens of bars as well as numerous changes to the musical text. A new engraving of the suite was published by Fromont in 1909 at the earliest, in which the publisher added many accidentals - particularly in the "Passepied" - and thus altered the harmony. This new engraving forms the basis for all later editions, although there is no evidence that Debussy authorized it and the associated changes.

The Bärenreiter Urtext edition, on the other hand, offers Debussy's original harmony, with the later changes appearing in small engravings. The editor Regina Back describes the development of the suite and documents the various reprints with their alterations. She also provides explanations of the suite and the individual movements.
