This practical edition with the Urtext of the New Bach Edition contains everything that is considered certain for Bach according to the current state of research from the many-layered tradition of the "French Suites": the earliest complete version (A) from the pen of Bach's son-in-law J. Chr. Altnickol as well as the later, more richly ornamented developmental layer (B), which has survived in various sources. Neither the work title "French Suites", which was already in use for these works in the 18th century, nor a complete autograph have been handed down by J. S. Bach, which is why the variant versions of the suites BWV 814a and 815a are also printed alongside versions A and B. Although they are less certain, they do contain some of the original works. Although they are less secure, they contain several very attractive movements which are not included in the other versions (see music example). The suites in A minor and E flat major appear in several sources as part of the 'French Suites'. They have therefore been included in this complete edition. They are printed in the older form, BWV 818, 819 and in the more recent form, BWV 818a, 819a. For the first time, this comprehensive edition for practical use enables performers to make their own choice from the wealth of surviving material. The editor of this unrivaled, standard-setting edition is the internationally renowned Bach scholar Alfred Dürr. He has made a name for himself with various other editions as part of the New Bach Edition and with widely used standard works of Bach literature.
