Description:
With the six character pieces titled "Rêves" ("Dreams"), Bedřich Smetana returned in 1875—after more than ten years—to his favorite instrument, the piano. His compositional approach reflects two forms: the character piece and the grand virtuoso piece, with which Smetana engaged particularly during his time in Sweden. Also significant was the composer’s experience working on the first of the symphonic poems "My Fatherland," which was composed at the same time as the "Dreams.
The impetus for the cycle was a concert organized in the spring of 1875 by Smetana’s former students to benefit the composer, who had lost his hearing; Smetana expressed his gratitude through dedications he attached to the individual compositions.
This significant work by the founder of Czech national music has not been included in the complete edition of Bedřich Smetana’s piano works. Jarmila Gabrielová’s new edition, based on Emilián Starý’s first printed edition from 1879, represents the first critical edition of this masterful cycle.
