Brahms arranged the popular 16 "Waltzes" op. 39, composed in 1866 for piano four hands, for two hands just one year later and produced an easier version at the publisher's request. Brahms himself described the first version as suitable for "sensible hands", i.e. for more practiced hands, and the easier version as "perhaps for more beautiful hands", i.e. for domestic musical use; he initially announced the latter version to his publisher as a "children's edition". The catchy and musically easily accessible pieces are among the composer's most popular works and are particularly suitable for piano students and lovers of the Romantic repertoire.

The two editions of the Waltzes op. 39 (BA 9602, BA 9603)continue the series of Brahms's works in the critical-practical Urtext format published by Bärenreiter with an important contribution. The two versions are available as individual editions and are provided with fingerings. A reader-friendly score with easy turnarounds invites you to study the pieces and the simplified version is aimed particularly at beginners at the piano. Explanations on questions of performance practice with Brahms as well as an informative foreword on the genesis, sources and significance of the works and source-critical notes complete the two Urtext editions.

The editor
Christian Köhn teaches at the Detmold University of Music. One of his artistic focuses is on the piano works of Johannes Brahms. Together with his duo partner Silke-Thora Matthies, he won prizes at the ARD Music Competition in Munich and recorded the world's first complete recording of all of Johannes Brahms' works for piano duo. In addition to the Serenades op. 11 and 16 for piano four hands (BA 6570/BA 6571), he has also published numerous works for solo piano by Johannes Brahms for Bärenreiter.
