Description:
A short Adagio a 2 violini, viola, e Baßo, to a fugue which I have long since written for 2 pianos. This is what Mozart wrote in his "Personal Index" on June 26, 1788, referring to the fugue for two pianos K. 426, which was completed in 1783, at a time when Mozart was intensively studying the music of Bach and Handel. The fact that Mozart reorchestrated this fugue for string orchestra five years after it was composed and combined it with the Adagio shows how aware he was of the importance and value of this composition. Adagio and Fugue, which can also be performed solo, are therefore an important addition to the quartet repertoire for smaller ensembles.
