Description:
Ludwig van Beethoven's overpowering shadow made many subsequent composers hesitate to venture into composing string quartets. Saint-Saëns was no exception here and wrote his two contributions to this genre in the guise of classicism as late as 1899 and 1918. The form and style refer to the aesthetics of French quartets of the early 19th century and those of that other giant in the realm of string quartets: Joseph Haydn. Saint-Saëns' string quartets appear here for the first time in a scholarly-critical edition, which also contains, for the first time, the original version of the last movement of String Quartet No. 2 in score and parts. An informative introduction is included in the study score and completes this edition of important French chamber music, which is based on the Urtext of the series "Camille Saint-Saëns: OEuvres instrumentales complètes".
