Gabriel Fauré's only string quartet, composed between 1923 and 1924, is the composer's last work and was inspired by his publisher Jacques Durand. Until then, Fauré had obviously repeatedly put off tackling the string quartet genre due to Beethoven's overpowering example.

When Fauré wrote the quartet, he was already very ill. He only added dynamic markings and slurs in parts of the exposition of the first movement and then asked his former pupil Jean Roger-Ducasse to complete the work. Roger-Ducasse's additions were very far-reaching, however; he even changed and added some of Fauré's own markings in the exposition.

Bärenreiter now presents the first scholarly-critical edition of the work. All sources as well as the composer's letters, which provide valuable insights into the compositional process of the work, have been taken into account. Fauré's penultimate work in particular, his Piano Trio op. 120, was used as a guide by the editor in his editorial decisions.
