Description:
Maurice Ravel's only composition for string quartet - it dates from 1903 - is today regarded as one of the most important, most frequently performed and recorded chamber music works of all time.
Editor Juliette Appold traces the beginnings of the work and documents its premiere as well as the reactions to it, which came from none other than Fauré and Debussy. Reference is also made to later performances of the work, the early recordings under Ravel's supervision and the first edition published by Astruc.
This first critical edition of Ravel's String Quartet is based not only on the autograph, the first edition by Astruc and the proofs corrected and revised by the composer, but also on the revised edition published by Durand in 1910. All deviations from the score and the later published parts are listed in the Critical Report.
