Description:
César Franck completed his string quartet in the spring of 1890, the same year it was performed for the first time and published shortly before his death in October.
In this edition, Bärenreiter, together with the "Association Internationale César Franck", is publishing the string quartet for the first time in a scholarly-critical edition.
This publication draws on the first edition, the engraver's model on which it is based and the sketches with many cross-outs, which do not yet contain the authorized version of the first movement, as well as a copy of the autograph. Franck's letters and handwritten parts that he made for Eugene Ysaÿe's string quartet were also taken into account.
In her foreword, the editor Christiane Strucken-Paland traces the significance of the string quartet for Parisian musical life in the fin de siècle and places it in the context of the composer's other late chamber music works. She also describes the development of the work, its publication and reception and finally discusses aspects of performance practice. The accompanying facsimiles show Franck's struggle with the opening movement, and the critical report lists the various readings legitimized by the sources.
