The two string sextets (op. 18/BA 9419 and op. 36/BA 9420) by Johannes Brahms are among the highlights of Romantic string music and are among the most popular chamber music works of all.
The new Bärenreiter Urtext editions, edited by Christopher Hogwood, are the first scholarly-critical editions of these much-performed compositions. The editor has taken into account all known sources, including the two- and four-hand piano versions made by the composer himself, as well as a set of contemporary parts that offer alternative readings and insights into performance practice during Brahms' lifetime.
The study scores for both works each contain facsimile pages, the Critical Report and a preface to the edition and the history of their composition.
