Description:
Dvorák composed his twelfth string quartet in F major op. 96, known as the "American", in just twelve days during his summer vacation in Spillville, Iowa, in June 1893. This incredibly cheerful quartet has become one of the composer's most popular works due to its musical immediacy.
The work was published by Simrock in Berlin in 1894; Johannes Brahms had read the corrections, but the printed version has not survived. The editor therefore worked with the autograph and the first printing of the score and parts.
In accordance with current practice, this edition dispenses with the use of the treble clef raised by an octave in the cello part and replaces it with the tenor clef.
