Description:
Composed in 1893, Claude Debussy's only string quartet was his first masterpiece. Together with "Prélude á l'après-midi d'un faune" and "Pelléas et Mélisande", two other works from this creative period, the quartet cemented the composer's position as a rising "star" of the French music scene. Differences between the score corrected by the composer and the parts had already existed since the first publication in 1894. At a later date, Debussy added a large number of corrections and changes to a copy of the first edition; these changes have been incorporated into the present edition of the score. This scholarly-critical edition takes into account all the sources, including the composer's letters, which provide a valuable insight into the compositional process.
