Description:
The suites form the core of the cello literature. They are of timeless beauty and accompany cellists from their teaching years through to their professional careers at the highest level.
In keeping with their importance and therefore not surprisingly, there are countless editions of the suites. The composer's autograph, however, has not survived. It is considered lost. This is the particular challenge that the many editors have had to face over the years. The four surviving manuscript sources and the first edition of 1824 differ in many details, with articulation markings and phrasing being particularly inconsistent.
This facsimile edition presents the four manuscript sources and the first edition (as well as Bach's own arrangement of Suite V for lute) in synoptic form for the first time. The reader can therefore compare any passage in all sources at a glance. This allows an uncomplicated, direct examination of the sources.
