Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello are among the highlights of 18th-century solo string repertoire. For centuries, these pieces have also been performed on the viola—a practice that continues to enjoy unbroken popularity to this day. The source situation for these cello suites is complex: all autographs are lost, and the surviving sources often contradict one another regarding phrasing, bowing, and other interpretive details. While viola transcriptions have thus far been based primarily on Anna Magdalena Bach’s manuscript copy, this edition is based on the copy by Johann Nikolaus Schober and the copy by an anonymous copyist—presumably commissioned by Johann Traeg— as these manuscripts are more likely to reflect Bach’s ideas and concepts from a later phase of his life. Chung Park based his arrangement on a careful study of the Urtext editions of Bach’s Cello Suites published by Bärenreiter and recommends that violists consult these editions and the facsimiles of the sources they contain (BA05217, edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris and Bettina Schwemer; BA05278, edited by Andrew Talle) for further information on evaluating the sources and comparing variant readings. The Editor: Chung Park is a conductor, violist, and educator who received his training at the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Miami. He studied viola in Hanover with Hatto Beyerle of the Alban Berg Quartet. As an experienced musician and educator, Chung Park has taught at several universities—including the University of Central Florida, Appalachian State University, and the University of Chicago—and has given master classes at numerous locations throughout the U.S. In 2022, he was appointed conductor of the St. Olaf Orchestra at St. Olaf College in Minnesota.
