Description:
Robert Lindley (1776-1855) was England's most famous cellist for more than fifty years. In 1822 he was appointed as the first cello professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he remained until he retired in 1851. Lindley was a respected and sought-after teacher and, apart from the present Capricci, wrote a cello school and composed several concertos and chamber music in which the cello plays a prominent role.
In the "Capriccios and Exercises" appear a variety of tone sequences in major and minor keys, exercises for the thumb position and numerous double-stop passages; all of this is framed within a melodic framework. Bärenreiter's critical-practical edition of the Capricci and Exercises for the cello, edited by Valerie Walden, offers cellists and teachers excellent new material for teaching.
