Description:
The French composer Camille Saint-Saëns enriched the musical world with a large number of masterpieces for the violoncello, including concertos, sonatas and miniatures such as "The Swan" and the "Allegro appassionato" op. 43.
The present edition, based on Bärenreiter's series Camille Saint-Saëns OEuvres instrumentales complètes, is a first edition of the Sonata in D major for violoncello and piano. Although correspondence proves that two complete autographs existed, only one incomplete autograph has survived, which contains the first movement and parts of the second, which breaks off. In his last work for the cello, Saint-Saëns juxtaposes highly rhythmic passages with lyrical ones. These contrasts are intensified by bold harmonic changes and imaginative thematic work.
A delightful addition to the cello repertoire.
