Description:
Three angels sang a sweet song, which sounded far into the high heaven ... This song, which is at least 400 years old, is the basis of the Fantasia: the memorable beginning of the song is easily perceptible as the inspiration for the head motif, and all the other wide-swinging lyrical cantilenas of the viola have also emerged from it, which are accompanied by the organ with an idiosyncratic chorale, until finally the original melody appears luminously in the viola. The original hymn text focuses on the events of Holy Week, but the opening and closing verses expand the text to general validity and thus make its use in the entire church year seem meaningful.
