A total of 25 violin concertos by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) have survived. This probably means that only a fraction of his entire oeuvre in this field has survived; however, it is clear from this reduced inventory through the ages that the violin was the most important and versatile solo instrument for Telemann - as it was for other composers of his time. The introductory music to two operas are violin concertos, to "Der neumodische Liebhaber Damon" (1719) TWV 21:8 and to "Die last-tragende Liebe oder Emma und Eginhard" (1728) TWV 21:25. Eight concertos have two violins as solo instruments. The violin plays an important role in almost all of the concertos for several solo instruments.

Not one of Telemann's numerous violin concertos has found its way into today's concert repertoire or violin pedagogy. This regrettable circumstance is easy to explain: To this day, there is a lack of reliable editions for practitioners. This edition remedies this shortcoming and gives violin students and teachers the opportunity for the first time to become acquainted with three selected violin concertos by this baroque master, whose inventive compositions in their formal diversity point the way from Vivaldi to the solo concertos of the classical period.
