Das Andantino 'Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen' entstand als gottesdienstliche 'Gebrauchsmusik', als Zwischenmusik, nach Lesungen oder Predigten, als Instrumentalmusik während der Kommunionausteilung bzw. des Abendmahls. Aber auch als 'Konzertstück' ist es schon erklungen.
Das Andantino besteht im eigentlichen aus zwei Thesen (Themen), die die Musik in der durch die Liturgie vorgegebenen gebotenen Kürze aufzuarbeiten versucht: 'Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben' und 'Gott ist bei uns'. Diese beiden Themen, musikalisch vereint, ergeben dann das dritte: 'Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen'. Die Grundlage für diese Expositionen und Metamorphosen bildet dabei die Melodie des Liedes, die Aufnahme in das Neue Gotteslob gefunden hat. (Kurt Grahl)
