Description:
Joseph Joachim's "Fantasies on Hungarian and Irish [Scottish] Motifs" represent his first serious attempt to compose virtuoso music for violin with orchestral accompaniment. On the one hand, he aspired to create popular works, on the other he wanted to prove his cosmopolitanism. The young Jewish-Hungarian musician spent many summers in England. Playing familiar melodies to English audiences was extremely well received. Performing the "Fantasy on Hungarian Themes" in German cities was in keeping with the composer's self-presentation as a 'Hungarian boy', as Mendelssohn humorously called him. Joachim was well aware that the 'style hongrois' was very fashionable in European capitals.
