Ravel worked on his sonata for violin and piano for four years (1923-1927) - longer than on any other composition. According to Ravel, the reason for these difficulties was the "fundamental incompatibility" of these two instruments.

However, this is precisely what makes this sonata so charming: Violin and piano are independent and make music sometimes alongside, sometimes with each other: here in a lyrical Allegretto, there in a jazz-inspired second movement, finally in a "perpetuum mobile" finale. This new edition by Douglas Woodfull-Harris corrects numerous inconsistencies in earlier editions.

Also available in the same booklet is the "Berceuse sur le nom de Fauré", available for the first time in a critical Urtext edition. This lullaby for violin and piano varies its own theme derived from Fauré's name.
