Description:
The second half of the 19th century was a kind of "golden age" of the violin sonata in France: Violin sonatas as influential as those by Franck, Fauré or Saint-Saëns were among the successful works in this genre, which inspired a large number of other compositions.
Saint-Saëns' Violin Sonata No. 1 entered the repertoire of numerous violinists of the late 19th century soon after it was written. It was also this sonata that inspired Marcel Proust to write the fictional sonata of the composer Vinteuil in his novel "À la recherche du temps perdu".
This practical edition by Fabien Guilloux and François de Médicis corresponds to the musical text of volume III/4 of the series "Saint-Saëns - OEuvres instrumentales complètes". It carefully evaluates Saint-Saëns' lengthy corrections of the Durand first edition as well as the autograph sources and presents a score that is optimally arranged for practical use.
