Arcangelo Corelli, the violin virtuoso of his time, published his "Sonatas for Violin and Basso continuo Opus V" in Rome in 1700. The sonatas are, as it were, a compendium of violin playing in Corelli's time, to which all composers of later violin compositions referred.

Over the years, the sonatas have been published in almost 100 editions, all based on the first edition, which only contains the solo violin part over an unsuspended bass part. The sonatas are known today in a large number of modern continuo realizations, but a realization from Corelli's time by Antonio Tonelli has also survived, which is presented here for the first time in a modern practical edition. Tonelli's realization surprises with full chords, some of which are fingered with both hands.

In addition, the new scholarly-critical edition offers many previously unpublished ornaments for the violin part, most of which have survived in manuscript sources and originate from the pens of Tartini, Geminiani, McGibbon, Dubourg and Roger (from a reprint of the sonatas from around 1710). These ornaments are included separately so that the musician can place them on the music stand alongside Corelli's originals.

The new Urtext edition is completed by a preface, a critical report and an appendix with preludes by Tonelli for keyboard instrument.
