Description:
The ten "Biblical Songs" op. 99 based on psalm texts from the Czech Kralice Bible are the highlight of Antonín Dvorák's extensive song oeuvre. The unique cycle was composed in the United States in 1894. Although Dvorák had already set several biblical texts to music before, his solo versions with piano accompaniment are the first of their kind in Dvorák's compositions. What all the songs have in common is their sensitive response to the meaning of the text and the precise declamation of the Czech language.
The new edition uses Simrock's first edition (1895) as its main source, including an independent stave with the altered notation for the German and English versions of the vocal text. This solution, which corresponds to Dvorák's essential conception of the declamation of the language, was authorized by the composer.
In contrast to the previous edition, where there was a stave and the translation attempted to imitate the Czech declamation, in this edition - as with Simrock - there are language-specific alternatives in the notation as well.
